Glad you had a great trip. see, all that pre-visit anxiety was for nothing. a phone call isnt much off an extra. as they say in korea, "challatda!" brian
Hey Zenta, I am back in Germany. My school reunion in Singapore after 28 years was awesome. The pilgrimage across Korea was incredible! I was so blessed with wonderful encounters. I slept in different temples everyday, from Busan all the way to Soraksan and I was never rejected or sent away. Things went smoother than I could ever imgaine. Sorry I didn't give you a buzz.... there wasn't much time along the way for any "extras".
Hey Zenta Brian, practice as usual here. I went on a one week retreat recently to meet Stephen Batchelor (I already met Martine b4) - is was a totally different experience - less Zen more Dhammapada. I found it very interesting and inspiring. Right now, I am getting myself mentally ready for my coming trip to Spore and Korea. A bit scared about the pilgrimage now that time is drawing near.... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Hi Brian,
How are you doing these days? I'm a bit confused by your post, did you mean to post on my page? (I'm trying to remember now if I forgot an appointment!) Things have been quite hectic, we're getting ready for the Frankfurt book fair, and trying to get everything to the design and layout people in time. I'll be up in Seoul tomorrow for a Dharma talk in the evening though. Take care.

July 1, 2009 It is raining very hard here in Largo. Our garden is getting a much needed soaking. The mandarin ducks, turtles and th young alligator are happy. The amaranth, papaya, loquat, moringa and pineapples are drinking deeply. Occasional lightning and thunder. The puppies and the cats are sleeping; the cockatiels are enjoying the cool breeze through their cage.
Hi Brian,
How are things with you these days? Enjoying this spring weather, I hope! I was wondering if you had time tomorrow afternoon for tea (or coffee!)?
no, ho ho ho! he really WAS a Buddhist, a Zen monk! didnt you know? the santa claus we know was dreamed up in the u.s. in 1931 to cheer people up because of the depression. but he goes back all the way to the 9th century. he was a Zen monk who was fat and jolly and who carried a big bag of toys and candy, and he wandered around the countryside making kids happy. that was his practice..... but that's not the end of the story! he was loved by everyone, but when he was dying, he said, "people's faith in Buddhism is so weak that they wouldn't even recognized the Future Buddha if they saw him!". And he died right then and there. so the people thought, "ah, he must have been the Future Buddha and we didnt even know it!" So that's how the fat-bellied Buddha that you see everywhere in Chinese temples got to be called the Future Buddha in China (but not in Korea). And then the Chinese Daoists started calling him the "good luck" Buddha, which really started messing things up. anyway, like so many other things, this story no doubt traveled to the west and they made their own version of Zenta Claus. i send you a picture of a painting of Zenta Claus by my teacher, which has been passed down for centuries. notice the whiskers and the belly and the kids and the bag of goodies! and there you have it. so it really is Zenta Claus!..... in about 1.5 hours it will be May 2 and Buddha's Birthday here, so Happy Birthday. and Ho Ho Ho! hapjang, Brian

I have a number of Net of Indra" t-shirts from a limited printing. The design is from a Buddhist jewel which I developed while doing a painting project in Bangkok, and which I named "Net of Indra" - I think it fairly well projects that teaching that everything in the universes… Continue
