Namu Kwansaeum Bosal! Greetings and thanks for the note. The box is usually orange, and it's for the record of the painting. It usually includes name of temple and location, name of temple master, name of painter, a list of donors to the financing of the painting, and the date by Buddhist calendar. There you go! No winter? I would have thought your winters would have been on the icy side. Actually, what you have to look out for here are the summers. Very Humid! (At least for someone from a northern climate.)
But Dharmically speaking, Korea really has a lot to offer. There's problems with the languages and meeting real practitioners,(and spicey food!) but the rewards are more than worth the difficulties.
